THE NEW JOSE GONZALEZ ?

August Landelius

Références musicales : José Gonzalez, Jeff Buckley
August Landelius - To them, to me (mp3)

You receive mp3s, you get tips, you find MySpace pages and one day you listen to a really good tune that makes everything you heard recently pointless. That's what happened to me with August Landelius, a young José Gonzalez (same half awake voice, with the add of a discrete electro touch). Sure, right now he's unknown, but I bet it will not stay that way for ever. Cause someone who can write a song as brilliant as To them, to me HAS TO have a bright future, right?

PS : have you noticed there was no wordplay with "August" in this post?

(AbsRecommended)

ELECTRO PUNKO FLUO

Lucy and the Teenage monster

Références musicales : John's Candy, Electrelane, Elastica, Le Tigre
Lucy and the Teenage monster - Dance Steps (mp3)

A childish name. A secret band. A brilliant video (made by PUNX).
Lucy and the Teenage monster? You can say they sound like Le Tigre. But you can picture them as some kind of electro-punko-fluo-kids-Moldy-Peaches as well.

Pour mes compatriotes français

Un nom enfantin. Un groupe secret. Une excellente vidéo (réalisée par PUNX).
Lucy and the Teenage monster ?

REFRESHING POP WITH BOUNCY BEATS

Niels Nielsen

Niels Nielsen - We are youth (video)

Références musicales : The Tough Alliance, The Embassy
Niels Nielsen - Tell me now (mp3)

I'm all about names, ya know. I mean band names, songs names, artist names. Even blog names. "Absolut Noise" for instance is not that brilliant since every anglosaxon guy put an E at the end without realizing it is a Swedish word. Not only a vodka brand. Anyway, Niels Nielsen is a name you obviously remember. Good news : his music is actually worth to be remembered too.

Facts : Niels will release this summer an EP and an album. His debut one. Called CV. Tell me now will be featured on it.

Comments : if you like the Tough Alliance or the Embassy, you probably gonna like this. Melodic pop with bouncy beats. Sweet but not mellow. Tell me now is a true hit that will get crash in your brain. If the rest of the album is as great as this pop firework, we will have a strong debut record. In one word : promising. In two : very promising.

Parmi les morceaux : Tell me now..

Tell me now risque de s'incruster dans vos neurones.

INTERVIEW ABOUT THEIR NEXT RECORD

Pascal

Pascal - Dansar (video) <-- new song but bad quality sound.

Unusual and brilliant. These are the two words which come to my mind when I think about Pascal. After a very Jesus and the Mary Chain first record called Förbi Fabriken, they released last year a more loud-Elvis Galgberget. It was in my best of 2008. You can buy them here and find my other posts about them there. This is one of my favourite Swedish band, for sure.

Planned for January 2010, their third album is quite awaited. You wanna scoop ? It might be called "Orkanen närmar sig". Manuela and Mimmi, the two girls of this trio, answered my questions. If they do not always agree with eachother, they seem to have a sharp point of view about what they want.

How would you describe your next record?
Manuela
: Dark, rock n' roll, heavy.
Mimmi : More of the 80s than the others. It is more beautiful and not quite as agressive as Galgberget. But it is still kind of dark but not in a gothic sense. It is very hard to explain. You'll have to hear it.

Its name?
Manuela
: No name right now, mabye "Orkanen närmar sig".
Mimmi : We were thinking of "Orkanen närmar sig" and that means "the hurricane is getting near" but nothing is decided yet.

Is it important for you to sing in Swedish?
Manuela
: Yes, it's easy to express yourself in that way. Like how you fell. But we will try in English in the future.
Mimmi : Everytime we try to write and sing in English it just feels wrong. It is really hard to express yourself in a language that is not your native language. All those details such as our sometimes black sense of humour is then lost.

You quote Elvis in your songs, made a cover of "Tutti Frutti"... Elvis is a reference few bands actually do nowadays. What does he mean for you ?
Manuela
: He's the King, he can make you happy. That's it. He started rock.
Mimmi : Personally Elvis does not mean that much to me - other than the fact that he died on a toilet and that sometimes you can be afraid to share his destiny - to die alone too soon on a toilet. Of course his music was wonderful as well. But I'm more of a synth 80s kind of person rather than rock n' roll from the 50s. That is more Manuela's thing.

I always thought your music would be just perfect for a David Lynch movie such as Twin Peaks. If you could do a soundtrack of a movie which director would you like to work with ?
Manuela
: We all love Lynch! And I like Jarmusch and Kaurismäki as well.
Mimmi : I feel that if any director loves our music and wants to combine our art with his/hers that would be very flattering. But of course if David Lynch calls us and asks we would not say no. I think we all love his art.

The photos you're in, your teeshirts, your record covers do not seem to want to look "modern". Same thing with your music : there is no keyboard or electro like many rock 21st century do nowadays. Am I wrong? How would you like people to picture Pascal?
Manuela
: A band who likes to play rock. And of course it's nice to look good when you play and in pictures. We like old stuff.
Mimmi : We are all interested in art in some ways. And of course our personal taste reflects on our albums and photographs but it is not a concious PR strategy to fake some kind of old school look. It is just what we like. Very few modern things are beautiful. I prefer Jugend ahead of Ikea and that is not so strange.

What kind of music do you listen to at home? Your fav Swedish bands?
Manuela
: Everybody in the band like diffrent things, from synth, punk and rock. We don't have a favourite Swedish band... sorry.
Mimmi : My favourite Swedish band right now is Entombed.

What were you doing before to answer those questions?
Manuela
: Preparing to go to bed!
Mimmi : I wish I could say that I did someting cool like "I stole a car and drove our in the desert and had sex with my boyfriend" but I was just doing the dishes.

EVEN COWBOYS GET THE BLUES

Love Olzon

Love Olzon - Alla Själars Aveny (live at the Swedish TV)

Références musicales : Bob Dylan, Bright Eyes
Love Olzon - Söker en Ängel (mp3)

So the Tallest man on Earth is the Swedish Bob Dylan, right? But how about Christian Kjellvander? And how about Love Olzon? The first time I heard about him, he was the producer of Nina Kinert's first and second albums. I knew he played some kind of folk-blues music on his own, but I never actually managed to find his record. Then he quit my radar... until those last weeks.

Fri från dig
is his latest record (buy it here). His successful comeback. If you wonder what folk/blues music could sound like when it is sung in Swedish, here is the answer.

Pour mes compatriotes français

Alors the Tallest man on Earth est le Bob Dylan suédois, hein ?

NEVER TOO LO-FI

Mattias Alkberg

Références musicales : The Bear Quartet, MABD, The Moldy Peaches
Mattias Alkberg - Jag är en antenn (mp3)

Not a lot of posts those last days since nothing much excited me within the Swedish music scene lately. I guess Swedish winters are more interesting than summers, musically speaking. The darkness, I suppose.

Today, a part of the Bear Quartet once again : its singer, Mattias Alkberg, who answered my questions with Jari about the soon to be released BQ record in my latest post. This time, he is all alone. NO BQ members. No MABD. Just Matti, his guitar and a out of time sound.

Behind this first solo record, a nice story : Matti was supposed to release a 7'' this summer but he released a whole record instead, called Neverna, planned to be released in September. Consequently, he gave away this 7'' for free download. The music? Three great tunes. Lo-fi. Very lo-fi. Never too lo-fi.

Lo-fi. Très lo-fi. Jamais trop lo-fi.

THE 89 INTERVIEW

The Bear Quartet

Bear Quartet - Northern (live in Stockholm) <-- new song from 89

Bear Quartet - Carry your weight (live in Sthlm) <-- new song from 89

I told you the Bear Quartet would be back on the 9th of September with a new record called 89, produced by their new label Adrian Recordings and not the previous one A Westside Fabrication. Excited ? I sent Mattias Alkberg and Jari Haapalainen (singer and guitar) some little questions. They answered back with some little answers. Here is the result : a not that little Q&A about BQ's 89.

Usually, BQ is quite prolific, but it's been three years since the release of your latest record (now I understand its title "Eternity Now"...). It's the first time in BQ career since you spend that much time without releasing a record. What happened?
Matti
: we were busy and a little bit sick of each other I suppose. But nothing a three year hiatus couldn't fix.
Jari : my production work (for other artists) got in the way, it was difficult to find the time... also, A Westside Fabrication couldn't any longer give us the money (which isn't much) we needed to be able to record in the way we felt we wanted to.

Why signing to Adrian Recordings? A re-born? The will to touch a wider audience?
Matti
: No, the audience-part is still not that interesting to us, though if Adrian is trying to reach a wider audience it's totally ok by us. The main reason is that A Westside Fabrication couldn' t afford to spend enough money on a Bear Quartet album. I know they tried, we did too, but it just couldn't be done. So we had to part ways really. And we're very grateful Adrian contacted us in our time of despair. And for the record we're still friends with Westside. I'm releasing my solo album on Westside and Jari still does some work for them as well.
Jari : see above. Plus they contacted us and were really interested in releasing a BQ album.

How were the recording sessions? What had you in mind when you went into the studio?
Matti
: The sessions were great. We all had bits and pieces that we jammed together into songs. We were going for that big, luxurious sound of records like Kate Bush, Simple Minds and Talk Talk. We recorded it more or less live in six days. And we're all satisfied with the results.
Jari : very creative. We spent 6 days recording + 7 days mixing. We had 7 songs finished before we went into the studio. We'd been rehearsing for five days + played a show in Denmark, playing the 7 songs we had finished. In the studio we wrote/arranged three more songs.
As always, I wanted to make music that was heading somewhere, maybe not always knowing where, but somewhere...

According to the four songs you put as free listen (AbsNoise : they're not as free listen anymore), it seems to be more heterogeneous than your previous records. More "pop/rock". More accessible. Do you agree?
Matti
: no, not really. We've never set out to NOT be accessible, no more than we tried to be more so. We've always tried to make records we would like to listen to, that felt new to us. We never had listeners in mind. It's just records to us. We got tired of writing indierock some 15 years ago, but that's it really. In Sweden this has been somewhat of a problem for some people who were hoping for us to keep releasing Mom And Dad or It Only Takes A Flashlight To Create A Monster time and time again. But that's never been a concern of ours. But if your question is whether we made this album with more traditional instruments (in the "pop/rock" context) compared to how we made Eternity Now the answer is obviously yes. But it's of absolutely no importance to us. If we wanna make the next record playing on tins and cans and furniture instead of guitars we will do so.
Jari : heterogeneous, yes, at least sound wise... more pop/rock? Don't know, don't think so... but we wanted a legible, clear sound, and I guess that makes it more accessible.

How would you sum this record up ?
Matti
: a classic.
Jari : I don't want to sum it up.

Why this title "89"? 89 like 1989 (the Berlin wall, fell, Internet was created)? 89 like 1789 and the French Revolution ?
Matti
: Yeah. The fall of communism, the rise of libertanism. The birth of The Bear Quartet. All things of historical matter that caused more problems than solutions although the intentions were good. And still are.
Jari : a lot of things happened in -89, the Berlin wall yes, and that was also the year when BQ started, as a band. 20 years ago.

What can we expect from BQ now? A tour? Will you play outside Sweden?

Matti
: I can't really see us touring Sweden like in the "good" old days. But if we can get enough money to survive and continue to support our families we want to play abroad, yes.
Jari : I don't know. Maybe we won't play live ever again. If someone wants us to come and play, where ever it is, we will consider it, but I don't know. It would be great to record another album, I have some ideas...

A SIMPLE PLAN

The Argument

Références musicales : Weezer, Hefner, Grandaddy
The Argument - Nothing remains (mp3)

Do you prefer a weird band which makes bad music or a regular one which makes good tunes? The Argument belongs to this second category. They simply play melodic pop songs. Half between Hefner and Grandaddy. Everything Depends is their second EP. You can download it for free here. I cannot promise you're gonna LOVE this, but if you do not LIKE it, I will not understand.

The Argument appartient à cette seconde catégorie.

Southside Stalkers - Five (fan video)

Références musicales : Doctors & Dealers, Bob Dylan, Brian Jonestown Massacre
Southside Stalkers - Bones (mp3)

On my Absolut Noise MySpace page, I have 24 "top friends". Southside Stalkers is one them (my previous posts about them here). One of my 24 favourite Swedish bands then. And they're back, with a new album planned for this year. Their second one.

Bones is gonna be the first single. Fun. It will be released in a couple of months and is build on this old song "left bone connected to...". Fun. As usual, the voices of Indy and Sparrow (check out her other band Doctors & Dealers) match perfectly.

Is it rock? Yeah. Pop? Yeah. Country? Yeah. Goddamn fun? Yeah. But I told you so already, right?

Ouais. Pop ? Ouais. Country ? Ouais. Diablement fun ? Ouais. Mais je vous l'ai déjà dit ça, hein ?

WHEN YOU WERE WINNING

The Legends

The Legends - Always the same (video)

Références musicales : Jesus and the Mary Chain, Wavves
The Legends - You Won (mp3)

I have not written about The Legends in this blog for quite a long time. Did not even mention their latest record Over and over. Its American release allows me to eventually come back a little to it. There are no many bands which can reinvent themselves the way The Legends do. I remember to have seen them live at Pop Dakar back in 2004. We were after the release of their first EP (if I can trust my memories). I wondered how they could be so many on such a little stage. Three girls were clapping, Johan Angergård was singing and I was enjoying their 70s sound.

Over and over is more 80's-90's. It begins with this You Won. As a stupid music lover, I truly pay attention to the way an album starts. Here, it's just perfect. Bass, drums, dirt. If I were, a DJ I would sample that.

PS: my long interview with Johan Angergård here.

Je n'ai même pas évoqué leur dernier disque Over and over.

Over and over est plus branché eighties-nineties.

(HALF OF) ZEIGEIST IS BACK !

Pearl Fiction

Références musicales : The Knife, Zeigeist
Pearl Fiction - Insomnia (mp3)

Zeigeist made my favourite Swedish electro record of 2008. Then they split. Now they're back. At least half of the band. Please welcome Pearl Fiction (not too sure about this name...), a Zeigeist 2.0 with only one of its members, Pearl.

Everytime Zeigeist was mentionned, there was the name The Knife right after. Both bands sounded a lot similar. What about Pearl Fiction? Well, according to the single Insomnia, if Zeigeist was the equivalent of The Knife's Deep Cuts record, Pearl Fiction is The Knife's Silent Shout. Darker. Less danceable. But the song If u wanna reminds the 1980s roots of the band. So we have to wait for the next future to see in which direction Pearl actually goes. Really catchy music anyway. Looking forward to listening to more.

Moins dansant.

BD

Elmo

Elmo - Die Alive (video)

Références musicales : Broder Daniel, The Cure
Elmo - Die Alive (mp3)

Elmo is signed on a label called BD pop and sounds A LOT like BD, i.e. Broder Daniel. Their debut record (released today, check it out) is a one-way time machine ticket to the record Broder Daniel Forever. It is disturbing somehow. But for a Broder Daniel fan like me, it is quite fun as well. Especially because Elmo songs are not bad at all. Even quite good. Like this Die Alive. I enjoy that. I really do. And after all, Broder Daniel was a Cure look alike, right?

So, open up your ears BD fans, have a listen to this band from Hemlös. Sure, the singer has less make up than Henrik Berggren, but he has more hair and, make no mistake, hair was the most important thing there was in the beginning of BD career. Don't be cynical : enjoy the romantism and the rock clichés (c'mon, those songs titles ! Unbreakable, Die Alive, Two become one... I mean... seriously ??).

Ca me plaît ça.

Unbreakable, Die Alive, Two become one... je veux dire... sérieusement ??).

NEVER TOO LATE TO BE ECSTATIC

Existensminimum

Existensminimum - 1993 (video)

Références musicales : LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Justice, Scissor Sisters, MGMT
Existensminimum - 1993 (mp3)

At first, I admit I did not get it. Three or four months ago, OK Boys, Existensminimum latest album, was released and the Swedish press got crazy and praised it as one of the best album of the year. Me, I was like "what this fuss is all about?". I gave it a listen. Was not that impressed and did not mention it in Absolut Noise.

Fortunately, I came back to it a little bit later, thanks to a great video, and realized how brilliant the record actually was and how stupid I had been. I guess I just needed time to enter this musical universe. Maybe because it follows its own way without copying any other bands. Anyway, this electro has a soul and those Boys are totally OK, with much more ideas than most of the records you're gonna heard this year.

IMPERIAL SURPRISE

Martin McFaul

Martin McFaul - Trouble in mind (live video)
Trouble in mind is an old song, not a new one.

Références musicales : Melpo Mene, Bright Eyes, José Gonzalez, The Wannadies
Martin Mc Faul - Sha la la (mp3)

I'm gonna be direct : if I have never mentionned Martin McFaul in this blog before, it is because I was not really impressed by his previous songs. However he is signed on Imperial Recordings, the home of José Gonzalez and of the brilliant Samuraj Cities, Promise & the Monster and Melpo Mene. So when I received a couple of his new songs, I did not actually plan to write a post about them, but I paid attention. Wise choice.

Sha la la will be featured on Martin McFaul second record Sha la love which will be out in September. It is a simple song with nothing particular. No great voice. No incredible lyrics. The most noticeable thing is a discrete bossa nova guitar. Not a "sexy" tune then, but it grows on you and that is the most important. Something unusual even happened to me : I could listen to it ten times in a row without getting bored. Since the other song I heard is a good one too, I'm looking forward to listening to the whole record. It might turn out to be a pleasant surprise.

NEW SONGS AND NEW ALBUM NAMED 89

The Bear Quartet

This is a bear quartet which has nothing to do with THE Bear Quartet.

Finally. My favourite band, The Bear Quartet, is back! With a new gig in Stockholm at Hornstull Strand, on the 10th of June. And a new record. Its name? 89. Ninety-nine like 1989, the year the Berlin wall fell, the year Internet was invented. Or maybe ninety-nine like 1789, the year of the French Revolution. Well, talking about revolution when you mention BQ does not really make sense : every album of theirs is a revolution compare to the previous one.

So how about their new sound? Just go there : thanks to their new label Adrian Recordings, you can listen to four of their new songs. It seems that 89 is gonna be more accessible, much more pop/rock than their two latest kind of experimental albums. The electro touch remains though, and according to those four songs, the sound of this record is more heterogeneous than their previous ones. The lyrics, as usual, are brilliant, like this obscure line "repeat the norm until it’s known by every heart sequence" which could be the anti-thesis of what BQ does. Oh, I forgot : their new songs are fucking great.

PS : time to reread the previous Mattias Alkberg and Calle Olsson (two BQ members) long interviews I did for Absolut Noise.

Pour mes compatriotes français

Finalement.

FROM THE LIVINGROOM TO THE CLUB

Jonathan Johansson

Jonathan Johansson - Aldrig ensam (acoustic video)

Jonathan Johansson - Innan vi faller (acoustic video at PSL)

Références musicales : David Ahlen, Loney Dear, The Cure
Jonathan Johansson - En hand i himlen (En fot i graven remix av Fredrick Carlsson) (mp3)

Jonathan Johansson will always be welcome in this blog. That was the case in May 2008 when he was unsigned, the case in January of this year when he answered my questions. Still the case today when he is remixed by Fredrick Carlsson.

En hand i himlen
is definitely his best song. A very powerful and emotional tune which will touch you even if you do not get its Swedish lyrics. Thanks to this remix, we can see that his music can make it on the dancefloor. Thanks to those videos, we can see it suits to the calmness of your livingroom as well. To be honest, right now, I cannot see any Swedish-singer-with-Swedish-lyrics better than him.

En hand i himlen

DEBUT ALBUM : WE ALL DIE

New Found Land

New Found Land - It would mean the world to me
(live at the Tram Sessions)

Références musicales : Nina Kinert, The Cardigans, The Concretes
New Found Land - Come to me (mp3)

A year has passed since my first post about New Found Land's Leave it behind. Many things have changed : the band found a label and released their debut record (buy it there). It is called We all die, but their music is not as dark as this title could suggest. Melancholic, yes. But which pop Swedish record isn't?

If their best song remains Leave it behind, the duo (Anna Roxenholt and Karl Krook) wrote eight other nursery rhymes. The record lacks a little bit of nerve, but some songs have this little "something more" which makes the whole piece really interesting. Like Come to me : more folk than their other songs, it reminds me Nina Kinert music. All in all, the album is a convincing debut but I can feel New Found Land can become even better in a next future.

Pour mes compatriotes français

Un an est passé depuis mon premier billet consacré au Leave it behind des New Found Land.

FROM THE OLD MENTAL INSTITUTION

iOktember

Références musicales : The National, Madrugada, Chris Isaak
iOktember - Be there (mp3)

In March 2006, while this blog was only one month old, I mentionned a very good combo called Infinite Regress. You have probably never heard about them. Too bad. And too late. This band has ceased to exist. Good news : members of Infinite Regress join some other fellows to be a part of iOktember, kind of The National meets Madrugada meets Chris Isaak.

The result is impressive. Let's take Be there : a deep male voice, a shy female one, many instruments. If the lyrics are not very original, the song manages to create a loud and dark atmosphere. Very romantic. Powerful. They recorded their songs in the basement of an old mental institution. You would be crazy to not listen to them.

THE DISHES

The Radio Dept.

The Radio Dept. - Keen on boys (live video)
NB : Keen on boys is an old song of theirs, not a new one.

Références musicales : Archive, Air, The Legends, Sébastien Schuller
The Radio Dept - David (mp3)

There are two kind of music : the one you listen to carefully alone in your bedroom and the one you listen to while you're washing the dishes. To me, The Radio Dept. belongs to this second categorie : their music is close to a background noise which lets your thoughts go without actually focusing on the sound. Some will call it elevator music. I admit this is usually not really my thing. But The Radio Dept. are better than most "ambiant music" bands. Especially on this David, their new single. Basically : regular Radio Dept. music with a catchy beat.
